Sports Collectibles Mean Big Bucks For Retailers and Individuals Alike

January 27th, 2009 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

There is no doubt that sports generate big bucks in the U.S. One needs only to look at the salaries of top professional players or the attendance at major sporting events to realize there’s lots and lots of money changing hands.

The NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB bring in about $11 billion in annual revenue, and that’s after expenses that include paying their average players anywhere from $1.25 million (on the low end in the National Football League) to nearly $5 million for the average player in the National Basketball Association.

Add to that the $52 billion spent each year in the U.S. on sports equipment and the $57 billion on sports apparel and shoes, and the money just keeps piling up. No matter what resource you use to define the overall sports marketplace, the numbers are staggering. A reasonable estimate for the money brought in by sports to our U.S. economy is $425 billion a year.

So it should be no surprise to learn that, when it comes to sports memorabilia and sports collectibles, there’s also money to be made. From sports franchises and giant retailers to individuals selling on line, there are people making money with sports collectibles every single day.

The great thing about sports collectibles is that their popularity crosses the line from professional to amateur and collegiate sports. Fans buy miniature Oklahoma Sooners football helmets, autographed hockey pucks by pro stars, and virtually anything with the logo of their favorite football or baseball team. Tiger Woods is a pro athlete without a team, but on any given day you’ll find over 3000 items on eBay related to him, and his personal line of golf apparel, the Tiger Woods Collection, makes hundreds of millions every year.

Since there are no hard and fast numbers associated specifically with sports collectibles, one can only assume that individuals, online and retail stores, large corporations, and sports franchises in the sports memorabilia business are all making money. You can also assume that the numbers just keep on growing.

Obviously the personal popularity of a particular athlete or the rise and fall of a particular team’s success makes a difference in the value of collectibles.

When Lance Armstrong was still racing and winning the Tour de France, his merchandise sold like hot cakes. Although still popular today within the biking community, Lance’s merchandise is not moving like it once did. The same can be said for fallen stars like Atlanta Falcon’s former standout Michael Vick, whose merchandise was pulled from store shelves. Today it goes for pennies on the dollar on eBay.

So what are the trends in sports collectibles and can people make money by collecting? The trends are constantly shifting, say experts. The National Basketball Association reports that sales of the NBA Hardwood Classics jerseys have tripled in the last three years. NASCAR is the fastest growing sports earner as the popularity of the sport has spread nationwide.

Many online retail stores have a unique advantage of being able to move quickly too capitalize on the victories and popularity of sports teams. When a team wins the Super Bowl or an NBA World Championship, the sale of that team’s merchandise and collectibles soars. Online retailers can often move much swifter than their bricks and mortar counterparts, quickly posting hot merchandise online and taking advantage of striking while the fire is hot.

The recent trade of Green Bay’s Brett Favre to the New York Jets led to a nearly immediate posting of Favre merchandise on online retail sites. From 24 karat gold New York Jets or NFL coins to brand new “#4″ Jets jerseys, sales were immediately brisk.

What fuels the sports collectibles and memorabilia industry the most is the breadth and depth of the field. Street & Smith Sports Business Journal recently concluded that fans spend the same amount each year on NFL licensed products as they do on college licensed products, with both bringing in more than $2.5 billion a year.

Sports collectibles mean something to the person who buys them. Whether you pay $20 for a licensed ball cap for your favorite MLB team or $100 for an authentic helmet with the logo of your favorite NFL team, fans buy merchandise and sports memorabilia because they love their team and want to be a part of something they view as very special.

Collecting sports memorabilia is much like collecting art. People do it more because they love what they are buying, not so much because they expect it to grow in value. Although collectibles, and even sports items that no one considers at the time to be collectibles, can definitely appreciate.

In 1893, when a nine man hockey team from Montreal won the first Stanley Cup, no one thought to save a jersey. Photos from the era do exist that show the jerseys, but one has never surfaced. According to sports experts, if one of the jerseys would turn up, it could fetch as much as $400,000, most likely from curators at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

So with appreciation dreams and the love of sport both working in its favor, sports collectibles will remain big business, just like the sports they celebrate. In fact, officially licensed merchandise from professional U.S. sports teams and colleges will fetch more than $10 billion this year for the leagues and retailers lucky enough to be in this very hot industry.

Tom Schwahn is a sports enthusiast and owner of Home-Team-Sports.com, an online retailer offering one of the nation’s largest inventories of sports collectibles. Home-Team-Sports.com celebrates America’s collective passion for professional and college teams and the athletes that make them great with top quality merchandise and superior customer service. Lewis & Clark Expedition – Did Sacajawea Voluntarily Donate Her Beaded Belt For a Fur Cloak?

January 25th, 2009 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

The place and event.

Shortly after the Corps of Discovery arrived on the Pacific west coast, it was no coincidence that several tribesmen appeared before Lewis and Clark wearing excellent fur apparel. These coastal tribes were commercially savvy. They had been trading with foreign sailors for years. They also knew what was on the explorer’s minds in addition to finding a cross-country trade route.

One day, Lewis and Clark were awestruck by a particular sea-otter shoulder-cloak worn by a tribesman. But, they didn’t have enough tradable goods on-hand to obtain it from him. The tribesman also wanted the blue-beaded belt worn by the corps interpreter’s wife, Sacajawea. Did she voluntarily give it up for that purchase?

Sacajawea teenage years.

About five years earlier, Sacajawea’s early teenage life underwent tumultuous change. As a 12-year-old Lemhi Shoshone girl living near the now Idaho-Montana border, she was captured by a party of Hidatsa warriors. From there, she was taken to a large Hidatsa-Mandan dual-tribal village near the Knife and Missouri Rivers in North Dakota, where she was adopted by a Hidatsa family. The practice of capturing children from different tribes was common among the plains tribes at that time.

During the next four years in her new home she learned the Hidatsa language and worked with the village women in their large field gardens. The Hidatsa and Mandan tribes were matriarchal, matrilineal agricultural tribes. That is, the women there owned and inherited the 20-feet-across, earth-covered lodges and the huge gardens they maintained. They also headed the large clans within these tribes, while the men attended to the village defenses and hunting needs. In fact, the women of these two tribes grew so much food, which they stored underground during the winter months, that they easily traded portions of it for needed goods from several nonagricultural tribes and from the French and English trappers passing through the region.

During these four short pre-marriage pre-motherhood years within her new tribe, Sacagawea, must have made a favorable impression on the older women there. Her adoptive mother could have been influential in their Hidatsa clan, but just how much, no one knows for sure. Still, Sacagawea was eventually given a blue-beaded belt by an influential society of the women there. According to the tribal historians, such belts were awarded to those who were industrious and, perhaps, to those who were sensible and well-grounded. The belt itself could have been three-fingers wide, with an extended section hanging down at the point of attachment.

This belt meant a lot to Sacajawea. It meant more to her than mere success through work. To her, this belt meant acceptance and accomplishment outside of her own tribal bloodline. It was a visible token of her all-around worthiness as a person, anywhere. This belt could have further inspired her to grow into a well-grounded mid-teenager. That’s when she married a French-Canadian fur trader at the age of 16. Shortly after that, in late 1804, they met the Corps of Discovery there at their village, where she gave birth to a baby boy on February 11, 1805. Captain Lewis helped with the delivery. The captains also hired her trapper husband, Touissiant Charbonneau, as an interpreter. He spoke French, Hidatsa, and Mandan, and could sign. As it also turned out, Sacagawea, who spoke Hidatsa and Shoshone, and their baby son accompanied him on this dangerous journey. Their son was less than two-months old when they departed their village for the west.

During the journey westward, Sacajawea showed substantial maturity and capability as well. Lewis and Clark praised her in their journals when she calmly retrieved floating goods from the river while the boat she was in began to capsize in a wind storm. She also supplied the corps with many wild edibles, and thought nothing of it. Additionally, she remembered the Shoshone-country landmarks and their language well. Thus, she helped immensely with the necessary interpretations when the corps arrived at her home tribe before crossing the Rocky Mountains. Furthermore, when the corps departed this village westward, she stayed with her fur-trapper husband. She and their baby son could have easily stayed there among her own people now that her brother was the chief of that Shoshone tribe. Instead, she stayed with her husband and the corps.

Back to the question.

Now, back to the question: did Sacajawea voluntarily donate her belt toward the purchase of that cloak? Although its not known for certain, she definitely could have done so at the behest of the corps mission to find a trade route, which she understood. After all, she had been watching the corps collect animal and plant specimens, pelts, and skins for several months by then. So, during that spellbinding splendid-fur-for-sale moment, she could have given Lewis and Clark the nod to add her belt to the trade package. Quietly and tearfully, perhaps? Yet, she also knew that the coastal tribes knew the corps had a vested interest in the furring industry then. That’s why these tribes could demand the highly prized chieftain beads, like, the blue ones on her belt.

Moreover, the very next day after purchasing that fur cloak, November 21, 1805, Clark noted in his journal that they had given Sacajawea a “coat of blue cloth” to compensate her for the traded belt. That blue coat could have been a heavily adorned one of very fine cloth from a military dress uniform.

Are You Being Visited by a Ghost, a Loved One From the Other Side Or an Angel? – 5 Ways to Know

January 22nd, 2009 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

Everyone receives visits from ghosts, loved ones from the Other Side and angels. Even though many of these visits are meant to be comforting, sometimes the presence of an otherworldly visitor can be unnerving and even frightening. Knowing who these guests are, however, and why they’re visiting you can make their visit easier and often, even comforting.

Here are three ways you can tell these visits from one another:

1.Ghostly Visits - Visits from a ghost, or the earthbound spirit of a deceased individual, usually bears several tell-tale signs. First, their presence is typically not comforting. When you’re around a ghost you feel watched – even if you’re alone in the room. You might even begin to feel unexplained nervousness, sadness or depression. You may feel sudden cold spots in the room or, in some cases, you might even see a ghostly human image – if only for a moment. Some people have seen a kind of blur or a flash of movement when no one else is in the room.

2.Visits from Loved Ones from the Other Side – A visit from a loved one who is on the Other Side is a very different experience from a ghostly visit. While you can also feel a cold spot or a temperature shift when a loved one is around, you typically don’t feel nervous or uncomfortable when it happens. Along with the slight temperature shift, you may begin to reflect on memories of that loved one. Our loved ones often bring messages of encouragement when we need it, so you’re more likely to feel loved and comforted when they’re around. When a deceased loved one is around, we often start thinking of them and feeling their presence and reflecting on our memories of them as a result. For example, Tony, a hairstylist, feels his grandmother nearby whenever he is thinking his way through some of his life’s challenges. He smells her perfume, remembers her advice, and begins to feel the comfort she offers him. Visits from loved ones are a very positive, healing experience.

3. Angelic Visits - Angelic visits feel a bit different from when our loved ones visit. There is definitely a shift to a cooler temperature and often a slight breeze. You might even see sparkles of light where they move. Sometimes, because their energy is so pure and their vibration is so high, you can even feel a bit dizzy. Angels are available whenever we need them – they help us ease through conflicts and protect and comfort us through frightening times, though they most often respond to our calls and requests for their help. Angels are present with newborns and small children to comfort and protect and to pass on messages to their parents and caretakers. After my son was born, an angel appeared to me and gave me a message about his life purpose. While she was with us, the air around us felt as though we were on the top of a mountain. Unlike ghosts, an angel’s presence always has a purpose. They often bear a message or ensure protection and because of this you usually feel comforted, assured, loved and happy.

Successful Entrepreneurs and Philanthropy

January 21st, 2009 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

Think Bill Gates; the image that pops up in your mind is of a suave business tycoon, wearing a Giorgio Armani suit, diamond cufflinks and tiepin, a diamond studded top-of-the-line Rolex wrist watch, Gucci shoes, et cetera. The more imaginative amongst us may even smell the Calvin Klein Eternity perfume he must be wearing. Then there are people who may see the profile of a ruthless monopolistic tyrant with little regards for laws of fair play and equality.

A larger chunk of people will have the vision of their role model, inspiration personified, a living proof of what can be achieved in a lifetime and that is literally EVERYTHING. But probably then they belong to that fortunate strata of society that is just cursorily checking out this article from the confines of their plush offices, comfortable homes or from a swanky, up market cyber cafe. But the name Bill Gates have altogether different connotations for little Ankit.

Ankit is your normal kid apart from the fact that he has been diagnosed as an AIDS patient- the only inheritance his mother, a sex worker living and working in the by lanes of Kolkata, could pass on to him were strains of deadly HIV virus. For Ankit, “Bill Gates” is the name emblazoned on the side of the van that comes to distribute medicines and nutrient supplements in the slum he lives in. He is also aware of the fact that this is the name of individual who along with his wife is paying his medical bills and funding the NGO that runs a school where he is currently studying. Yes, we are referring to the “Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation”, the largest transparently operated charitable foundation which is currently the guardian angel for millions like Ankit across the globe providing them the right and means of living in an otherwise hostile world.

Welcome to the brave new world of successful entrepreneurs who are sweeping the world with winds of change through their considerable works of philanthropy providing succor to the underprivileged amongst us. In this august list Bill Gates is more of a rule then an exception. Here, we are talking about those self-made billionaires and millionaires who having seen the hardships of life are ready to give back to the society and make this world a better place to live in. This is the new crop of business persons who routinely make it to the Fortunes’ list of Who’s who but are still not snobbish or uptight about it.

Many of them have succeeded not because of the society but in spite of it. But still they acknowledge the fact that we all are clogs of the same wheel and well being of the individuals is not a zero-sum game. For them philanthropy is not just an extension of their corporate social responsibility, or the pursuit for the bored wife of a high flying CEO. For them it is a means of defining their existence in the larger scheme of things, something that completes them and provide them a purpose apart from mindlessly chasing money. That is why we get to see most of them so passionately involved in various projects and activities and they are not there simply writing down checks but they are more “hands on” making their presence and influence felt as well as leveraging their experience and intellect for the cause.

Let us try and examine what makes a successful entrepreneur a philanthropist. Is it in their DNA or had they learned the art of giving and sharing on their way up. It is worthy of being noted here that several studies point towards the fact that when it comes to charity self-made entrepreneurs are almost twice as generous as  compared to charitable Heirs that is millionaires who got their wealth mostly through inheritance. So it appears quite ironical that people hailing from the cut-throat world of modern day business where success often comes at the price of morality and innocence are so willing to support others.

But it will not appear so ironical if we study the fine print in greater detail. Most of these entrepreneurs have themselves got a helping hand early in their career. Whether it is in form of an angel investor or the friendly neighborhood uncle who let them use their garage, or the professor at the University who believed in them and polished their business proposal for final presentation; they all have got some help in one form or the other. Most of them were also beneficiaries of various scholarship schemes in the early phase of their career. It all makes them realize how significant even a small help can look from the end of the beneficiary. This ingrains the art of giving and reaching out in their hearts and this is a lesson they do not easily forget later in their lives. Most of the entrepreneurs when they start working on their innovative ideas do so in collaboration with some good friend or associate, someone who believes in them as well as in their dreams. So naturally they learn the ropes of sharing and collaborating and how beneficial symbiotic relations can prove to be.

So this is where they pick their living-for-each-other traits. They have the intellect that keeps them bothering with status-quo and as soon as they figure a way out they get on to work towards achieving it. In this world, ideas are a dime a dozen but success comes only to them who can execute these ideas and shape them into reality. This is a quality that makes them a success in business and this is the quality that distinguishes them in the arena of philanthropy as well since the projects they undertake usually achieves the objectives they have set out for. They bring in money and influence; have an eye for recognizing talent and try to nurture it. They want to be a part of the solution and hence their impact is often very positive and encouraging.

Is Black Men Skin Care Different?

January 20th, 2009 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

There are tons of resources for men skin care available, along with products made for men. Skin care has been part of many men’s daily regimen thanks to the benefits of great, fresh and young looking skin.

But what about men of color? Black men or Hispanic men? The truth is there is only a limited amount of resources that focus on skin care for Black men, which makes us wonder: does darker skin need different care?

The answer is yes. In African-American men skin there tends to be more razor bumps and burn and ingrown hairs. This is due to the different type of facial hair.

Also men of color can suffer from dark spots and hyper pigmentation which causes the skin to have an uneven tone.

So in order to address these issues a couple of companies and sites have created a special section for Black men skin care which is much needed. I’ve also seen a couple of skin care products for Black men available that work wonders.

Products such as Barc and African Male by men essentials are great examples of products made for Black men.

But of course proper skin care is the same for all men. No matter what your skin color or age, men should always follow a skin care regimen to help maintain a young and healthy looking skin.

Especially in for men with darker skin color, using a facial scrub/exfoliate and skin toner is essential to eliminating or keeping away from dark spots and hyper pigmentation.

Using the right shaving cream and after shave will also help reduce and alleviate razor burn and stop razor bumps.

Use the right skin care products for men and you will definitely keep your skin looking healthy, toned, young and overall attractive.

3 Rules For Dating – Or How to Learn the Basics

January 19th, 2009 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

Everybody makes a mystery out of dating, an ordinary everyday activity that is performed by millions of people on this earth. Every day. Every hour. Every minute. WHY is it that hard for some people to go on dates then? Is it because they are ugly? Sometimes yes, most of the times no.

Here are 3 rules of thumb that can change your dating life upside down.

The first Rule of dating is, “Don’t be too shy to approach”

Most people who don’t go on dates fail with the first step. They either lack self confidence or they build up a dark deep castle of thoughts what might go wrong in case they approach that certain person. First of all, dating is casual, everybody should do it- it’s nothing bad, if it would be bad you probably wouldn’t be here on earth. No one cares about what you do, besides yourself. People are approached everyday, some get through, some are rejected, it’s not that it matters. It’s all about yourself and that you feel comfortable approaching other people. In case you are really bad, start out small, ask for the time or something on occasion. Find a good pickup line and learn to approach. It’s not bad if you fail, you can always learn.

The second Rule of thumb is, “Be well groomed.”

Easy said, easy done- as long as you are not allergic to water, after-shave and eau de toilette you should be knowing what you do. And while you are at it, take a friend who you think has style to go shopping with you. It might help to find you clothes that are more attractive and make you look better.

The third Rule of dating is, “It’s not bad if you fail.”

Learn to live an interesting life and be happy. Get some cool hobbies and experience new things. Dating usually is about listening and telling good stories, and learning how to get closer and break the ice, but this is not the issue here. The more interesting your life is, the more stories you will have to tell. And in case you are into bits and bytes you have the hard time to find someone else who is into that as well, most people don’t think it’s the most interesting thing on the planet.

Max is writing for several dating related sites. Learn to approach people with easy Pick-up Lines, but don’t stop there and find out how your next date can be a killer date.

5 Tips For The Perfect Female Seduction

January 15th, 2009 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

The art of seducing a woman is easier than it sounds. Advertisers may tell you that you need the right aftershave, the right car or the right brand of clothes, but in fact the surface details are surprisingly unimportant.

I’m about to explain to you exactly what does matter when it comes to seducing your date. By following my five point plan, any man, regardless of income or appearance, can dramatically improve his chances of taking that girl to bed.

Step 1. Get her Interested

Whatever your intentions, you’re not going to get anywhere with a woman unless you can get her to like you.

There’s nothing more attractive to a girl than being found attractive. Make it clear you’re into her by being open, attentive and considerate. Hold doors for her, pay the bill, and focus on what she’s saying to you.

Keep your conversation light hearted and entertaining, and look for points of common interest. Shared hobbies and similar outlooks make things a whole lot easier, but don’t feel you have fake it; if you genuinely don’t have anything in common, distract her by asking lots of questions.

Step 2. Get Physical

As the evening progresses, start looking for excuses to touch her. Emphasize a point by brushing your fingers against hers. Empathize with her stories by placing your hand upon her arm. Brush stray hairs from her eyes or rub crumbs from the side of her mouth.

Lean away from her slightly, and watch as she subconsciously leans towards you – you know that she wants to be near you.

Step 3. Go Somewhere Quiet

Wait until the very last moment to suggest you head home together. Perhaps you are having a coffee after the meal, or you’ve just left the restaurant and are wondering what to do next. Tell her you’re having a wonderful time with her and that you don’t want the evening to end.

If she doesn’t invite you back to her place, don’t be discouraged. If she has already shown an interest in your guitar, your indie film collection or your pet iguana, invite her round for a look. Otherwise, ask if she cares to come over for coffee.

Step 4. Start with a Kiss

By this point your date will be tingling with anticipation – and the longer you make her wait for that first kiss, the more excited she’ll be.

Build up to the kiss slowly and seductively. Sit yourself next to her with your body turned fully towards her. Lean in slightly and move your gaze from eye to eye and down to her mouth. Really take your time with this.

When neither of you can wait any longer, kiss her. Be gentle, but firm. Tongues should be darting, not smothering. Put your fingers in her hair or your hand on her cheek. Pay attention to her pace and technique and alter yours to match.

Step 5. The Slow Seduction

Girls love to kiss, so take your time. When you are ready to move on, begin stroking her hair or her face. Run your fingers down her arms or along her legs. Put one hand in the small of her back and press her gently towards you.

Begin kissing her face and nibbling her neck. Run your hands up the side of her body and feel her pressing herself closer. Only when you can’t bear it any longer, slide your hand up to her chest or slip the tips of your fingers inside her clothes.

The trick to seduction is to always make the woman feel amazing. Treat her well, gaze at her adoringly and you’ll both have a night to remember.

The 123’s of the Best Natural Skin Care Cream

January 14th, 2009 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

I started looking for the best natural skin care cream because I have allergies and cannot tolerate heavy fragrances. The best skin creams for me are those that are not scented and have no added fragrance. Maybe, you want perfume in your lotion, but not me.

For many years, it was hard to find a good lotion for a man. Some cosmetic companies started making some products, but the only difference between what they had for men and what they had for women was the fragrance.

You might use aftershave or a dab of cologne, so why would skincare products contain any fragrance. The best natural skin care cream works for both men and women. The only fragrance is what naturally accompanies some of the ingredients.

The best skin creams will conquer dryness and can slow the signs of aging. They allow the body to produce more new cells, which leads to the production of new collagen and elastin fibers.

In order to help your body do this, the best natural skin care cream contains protein. The skin is actually a tightly woven mesh of amino acid proteins. Keratin is one of them.

You will see the ingredient listed in some of the popular brands, but the type that they used is not processed correctly and it cannot be used easily by the skin’s cells. But researchers in New Zealand have discovered that the keratin in wool is very similar to that of the human body.

Through a patented process, they created an ingredient called Functional Keratin, which is readily available for use by the skin. Only the best skin creams contain it. None of the major brands have it yet. And, it’s doubtful that they will, because it is an expensive ingredient and they prefer to use cheaper compounds, like fragrance, petrolatum and paraffin wax.

Another of the protein building blocks in the skin’s fibers is hyaluronic acid. Research has shown that the level of this protein in the skin’s layers lowers dramatically as we age. Now, they have learned that an enzyme breaks the protein down and leads to the reduced levels.

The best natural skin care cream contains a type of kelp that inhibits the activity of the enzyme, so levels of hyaluronic acid naturally increase with use. This has been proven to increase the skin’s elasticity, as well as heal irritation and relieve dry skin.

Cosmetic companies do not make the best skin creams, because they do not think of the skin’s health. Many of these companies have been in business for years and they continue to use the same tired ineffective ingredients that they offered to our grandparents.

I decided to look for something new. I decided to look for a different kind of company. The best natural skin care cream, in my opinion, is made by a health supplement company in New Zealand.

The products are not more expensive than the designer brands and the quality is a lot better. Plus there’s no added fragrance and they guarantee your satisfaction. What more could you ask for?
