Pica And Other Cat Eating Problems

October 31st, 2008 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

Most cat owners will notice from time to time that their cat decides for no apparent reason that they just don’t like their cat food any more and won’t eat it. This often completely puzzles a cat owner, as usually their cat just can’t get enough of their so-called favourite food.

Everything a cat does, even if it is the strangest behaviour you’ve ever seen is always caused by something. It is never because they are being awkward or naughty and the secret to finding out why they no longer like their food is to look at it through the eyes of the cat. This way the cause is often much clearer.

The two most obvious reasons a cat may no longer want its food, is firstly has the food gone bad. Sometimes cat food can become tainted in its packaging, check to see if the can has any dents in it or if there is damage to the packaging in any way. Smell the food your self and see if there are any unusual odours or any mould on the food. Secondly, is the cat ill in any way? Sometimes bad teeth can cause problems or they have a stomach bug. A vet should check out any suspicions of illness immediately.

Other reasons why your cat won’t eat its food are:

Getting food elsewhere – your cat may be catching its own meals if you live in an area where rodents are prolific. Or a neighbour could be feeding them. Cats have fairly small stomachs and need time between meals to digest their food. So a non-hungry cat may just be full.

Mating season – female cats when in season will go off their food naturally. So if you have a queen who stops eating but starts to display normal mating behaviour this is probably the cause.

Changes in situation – cats are renowned for being very fussy about change and they generally like their world to remain consistent. So even something as small as changing their feeding bowl or area can cause them to feel insecure about eating. Look around for little changes that may be causing your cat some concern.

Over feeding – In the wild cats choose to hunt and eat small rodents and birds. When you consider how much of a small meal this is, you may begin to realise that by providing your cat with a large bowl of food, you are providing too large a meal all at once. So when you see your cat eat a little then walk a way it’s not that they are “off their food”, it’s because they want time to digest what they have just eaten. Unfortunately if the rest of the food is left to sit in the bowl all day it is likely become less appealing and the cat will not eat it. Most cats will self regulate their food intake like this but in some cases you will get a greedy cat who will stuff themselves with a large bowl of food leading to an overweight kitty. As a rule it’s best to feed your cat small portions of food throughout the day to avoid overeating and wastage.

A less unknown fact about a cats appetite and feeding habits is that they have an inbred instinct to change their diet from time to time. This is a survival mechanism to prevent starvation in the wild if a particular food source disappears. This instinct is still present even in our domestic cats that have no worries of this. So from time to time a cat that normally loves to eat, say fish may suddenly only want chicken. From an owners point of view this is not only inconvenient but may also cause concern if their cat just won’t eat it normal food. A solution is to always have some other flavour of food in stock for these occasions so that worries of ill health can be eliminated from the owner’s minds.

A more serious eating problem known as Pica that some cats suffer from is a rather unusual condition where a cat will choose to eat non-food items. The most common substances are rubber, electric cables, fabric and wool. The cause of this unusual eating behaviour is unknown, although it is thought that it may be caused by under stimulation, in other words boredom. This is because most cases are reported amongst indoor cats, who do not have the normal cat stimulus of hunting, exploring and climbing etc.

At present there is no cure for Pica but as it is quite dangerous for cats to eat these substances, the main treatment is to make the substances they crave either inaccessible or taste very unpleasant. Whilst at the same time making their environment more stimulating and interesting, with toys, climbing frames and games. One such game is to hide small treats inside tubes or boxes, so that the cat has to seek them out and has to put some effort into retrieving them.

Getting to Know Your Cat

October 31st, 2008 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

Spay or Neuter a New Cat
Millions of cats are euthanized each year in shelters due to the overcrowding of animals. Cats can easily have over 10 kittens in a given pregnancy leaving owners with problem of trying to find homes for these kittens. There is an easy remedy to this problem and that is spaying or neutering your cat. Not only is this the responsible thing to do but it is better for your cat. If unspayed female are more at risk of developing the following conditions: breast cancer, pyometra, tumors of the uterus & ovaries. While unneutered male cats run a risk of developing testicular cancer.

The Price of having a cat
When people see a cute kitten they immediately decide to adopt it. Once home they realize they have made a mistake. They are not prepared for the responsibility of a cat, not all members of the family are happy to have a cat, resident pets don’t adapt well to the new addition or it just doesn’t fit into your lifestyle. The costs of pet ownership can be quite high. Licenses, training classes, spaying and neutering, veterinary care, vaccinations, grooming, toys, food, kitty litter, and other expenses add up quickly.

Checking the health of your new cat
When a household decides to adopt a cat, be it from the shelter or a breeder a great deal of time should go into selecting the right animal. Have questions about where the pet came from, how they have interacted with the staff, do the pet have a behavior issue, etc. If you are buying from a breeder, ensure they are registered with an appropriate cat council. When visiting the cattery check out the overall health of the animals. Always have everything in writing, including the final cost of the cat, health guarantees etc.

Buying purebreds from pet shops or backyard breeders
If you are buying a cat from a pet shop or a backyard breeder there is probably little chance that a proper screening of genetic problems has taken place. Pet shops generally charge more for purebred kittens than a registered breeder would. Not only this, but they most likely won’t have certified paper to ensure their authenticity and health. As a result, you may be buying a cat that could have substantial medical bills in the future or even pass away suddenly.

Seek veterinary help
People don’t realize the seriousness of a medical condition & fail to take appropriate action & get the cat to a vet. This may be due to the lack of knowledge they posses or funds. Cat owners should look into the cost of having pet health insurance or a special Cat Fund prepared in case of emergencies.

Flea Control Product
Unless recommended by your veterinarian, cats should be treated with a cat flea treatment only such as Frontline. Pet owners think they will save money by sharing their dog’s flea control product with their cats. This can prove fatal as cats are extremely sensitive to pyrethrins & pyrethroids which are often in dog flea products. The use of these on cats can result in death.

An appropriate diet
Cats have very specific dietary needs and as such need a balanced diet. There are many commercially available brands of cat food available which will fulfill your cat’s dietary requirements. Don’t attempt to feed your cat a home-made diet or other human consumed foods unless you have spent a great deal of time researching, as certain food s can do more harm than good.

Your roaming cat
Some owners feel that having your cat roam outside the home is beneficial for them. In actuality it may do more harm as free roaming cats & their lifespan is considerably shorter than that of indoor only cats, or cats with limited/supervised access outside. Outdoor cats run the risk of being highly stress by been hit by a car, attacked by another cat or dog, plus many other dangers they encounter which is very traumatizing.

Declawing VS not Declawing
Declawing has been a heated debate for many veterinarians, cat advocates, and owners alike. Some veterinarians consider declawing a “routine” surgery, while cat advocates consider it cruel, inhumane, and unnecessary in almost every case. Declawing is not for everyone and cat owners should have all the facts before making this decision.

Litter Box Maintenance
Cats will use a litter box only if it is kept clean, and if the litter is not scented or pleasant to the cat’s feet. Carefully maintaining your cat’s litter box will almost guarantee that you will not be faced with litter box avoidance problems. Don’t try to over clean the box with disinfectant or bleach as cats are very sensitive to these and other chemicals. It is also recommended to have an automatic litter box to help in reducing the maintenance. If your cat suddenly starts urinating outside the box despite your careful maintenance, you should immediately suspect a urinary tract problem and call your veterinarian.

How Does Sexual Functioning Change As We Age?

October 30th, 2008 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

Aging leads to changes in bodily appearance and organ functioning, lower levels of pituitary hormones, and a higher incidence of illness, injury, disease and chronic pain involving multiple prescriptions for pharmaceutical medications. These bodily changes, along with emotionally stressful life events, e.g., retirement, empty nest, loss of partner, or caring for elderly parents, may adversely affect sexual functioning.

Women

As women enter menopause, no longer ovulate, and their estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels drop, many experience decreased desire for and arousal during sexual activity combined with less powerful orgasms or even inability to attain orgasm. Physiologic changes may include:

• decreased lubrication leading to vaginal dryness and pain
• atrophy or expansion of vaginal tissues
• decreased elevation of the uterus
• reduced muscle tension with few orgasmic contractions
• rapid decrease in arousal after orgasm
• reduced spread of sex flush
• decreased sexual desire and arousal

Men

As males age, decreased testosterone and testicular function, lowered sperm count, enlarged prostate, and reduced muscle tension often cause men to require greater stimulation to become aroused, have less frequent and more easily diminished arousal, decreased sensation, less powerful orgasms, and becoming tired or exhausted for some time after orgasm and ejaculation. Physiologic changes include:

• delayed and less firm penile and nipple erection
• longer excitement phase and longer interval until ejaculation
• decreased pre ejaulatory emissions
• diminished lifting of scrotum and testes
• more rapid return to pre arousal state
• shorter ejaculation time with reduced volume and fewer contractions
• shortened phase of impending orgasm and expulsion of semen
• more rapid loss of erection and longer refractory period

How Can Sexual Functioning and Enjoyment Continue Throughout Life?

As we age, there are some gradual declines in the response rate and reactions of many of our bodily organs and tissues. However, our bodies continue to respond to stimulation as long as we are breathing, our brain is functioning normally, and our heart is pumping.
Having a sexual problem is not unlike having any other type of physical or emotional problem. There is a cause, either physiological, psychological, or a combination of both.

Recommendations for Treatment to Overcome Sexual Problem

• Make an appointment with the appropriate medical doctor to have an evaluation of your physiology: hormone levels, blood vessels, blood flow, acute or chronic infections or other diseases. Depending on your gender and what the specific problem is, you may choose to see a gynecologist, urologist, endocrinologist, internist, gastroenterologist, oncologist, etc.

• Make an appointment with the appropriate psychotherapist (preferably someone who is also certified to provide sexual counseling or sex therapy) for evaluation of your psychological, emotional, mental and spiritual state. Depending on what you believe is the primary issue (your relationship, your family situation, your own self image or sexual concerns, your own religious or spiritual conflicts), you may choose to see a Marriage and Family Therapist, a Mental Health Counselor or Professional Counselor, a Social Worker, or a Psychologist.

• If your mental and emotional concerns are severely interfering with your ability to function in your everyday life, you probably should consult with a psychiatrist who can evaluate you and provide appropriate medications to alleviate your overwhelming symptoms. Then, you may be better able to gain insight and the capability of overcoming your problems if you also work with a psychotherapist.

• If you are courageous and really want to overcome a long term physical problem (such as a woman having vaginal pain or vaginnismus), you may choose to see a physical therapist who is trained to work with pelvic floor dysfunctions.

• Work with a body therapist, someone who is trained to alleviate neuromuscular tensions and other body dysfunctions. You may be surprised how many physical problems in distant parts of your body are related to your current sexual problem.

Can Natural Progesterone Relieve the Symptoms of the Menopause?

October 30th, 2008 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

Natural progesterone is highly recommended as a menopause symptoms reliever. It will even out the hormones in the body if a female becomes estrogen dominant, which often happens around the time of menopause. It can also benefit women who have had a hysterectomy or who are suffering from symptoms of PMS.

Natural progesterone cream such as NatPro matches the progesterone that is found in the body without any unnatural substances being used. This means there are no side effects as you are simply replacing the body’s natural hormones with progesterone cream. You must be aware when purchasing progesterone cream that you only purchase the natural varieties such as NatPro, which is known to be a top of the line natural progesterone product. Synthetically produced progesterone will bring upon side effects to the menopausal woman such as migraines, asthma, fluid retention and cardiac problems.

These creams like NatPro are simply used on the skin. The skin then absorbs the progesterone. It is a painless method and even easier than taking pills. Natural progesterone will relieve the symptoms of menopause. Not only that, it also provides middle aged women with a host of additional benefits including:

Increases libido

Helps prevent against various cysts and cancer

Relieves depression

Normalizes blood sugar levels

Menopause generally occurs from age 50-55 in women. Symptoms associated with menopause commonly include:

Hot flashes – flushing of the face and overall increase in body temperature

Depression – Hormonal changes often cause depression

Irritability – Mood swings and irritability are common

Vaginal itchiness – Dryness and itchiness in the vagina is a common menopause symptom. See your doctor to rule out serious problems here.

Fatigue – Many women note that they feel extra tired during menopause.

There are also other symptoms experienced by menopausal women.

NatPro, the natural progesterone cream, provides fantastic menopause symptom relief. There are no toxic substances in NatPro and it is not tested on animals.

Progesterone has a regulatory effect on the body so if it exists in lowered amounts, the body can begin to react inefficiently. Many pre-menopausal women can tend to be estrogen dominant; therefore progesterone needs to be supplemented to even out the hormonal balance.

Estrogen dominance can lead to such things as uterine fibroids, weight gain, infertility and cancer. This is where natural progesterone comes in. It will help maintain optimal levels of progesterone whilst helping to avoid an over abundance of estrogen. With that said, menopausal women will eventually experience a drop in estrogen levels. This can lead to the usual array of menopause symptoms.

Supplementing with natural progesterone cream can help this situation dramatically. Natural progesterone cream like NatPro aims to resolve problems such as vaginal dryness and hot flushes amongst other menopausal symptoms.

Every woman will require a different amount of natural progesterone cream. It will depend on whether you are menopausal, pre-menopausal (where estrogen dominance can occur) and any other health issues you may have. It is best if you see a doctor before taking on any progesterone supplementation plan.

Jean Morgan is currently going through the menopause having previously suffered really badly with PMS and has researched natural remedies extensively. 6 Signs He’s Cheating

October 29th, 2008 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

He’s called again saying he’s working late again, or is he? You want to be proud of him for working those extra hours all the time, but something in your gut questions his actions. Well he may be actually be working late, before going and accusing him of cheating on you, lets do some investigating to see if anything else is awry.

Included are the top 6 warning signs that he may be cheating on you”

1. Online courtship: With today’s technology and the internet it’s incredibly easy to cheat. If he’s overly secretive with his email, or spends more than 4 hours of non work time on the internet per day. Spending this time in chat rooms, on websites or web cams a little further investigation may be in order

2. Being overly critical: If he is suddenly finding fault in everything about you, he may be cheating. If suddenly he’s advising for you to go to the gym, or dress differently, or change yourself just to please him, it’s a sign that he’s unsatisfied in your relationship and he’s most likely either already cheating or he’s going to cheat. If he’s overly critical you must tell him that it’s hurt you. If problems continue after you tell him, considering counseling for the two of you to help save the relationship could be an option.

3. Change of Plans: If all of a sudden his schedule is being occupied by other things that don’t involve yourself, when previously they did, and if this is becoming a patter especially say as Friday approaches it’s time to raise that red flag. The fact is, if’s he’s still interested in you, he’s gonna want to be with you, but if the common phrase that you hear coming from him when you tell him you want to do something is “I’m going out with the guys”, then something could be off. The best way to deal with this is to confront him directly. Just come right out and ask him, if he gives you some sort of vague answer or blows off the subject completely, somethings not right.

4. Ear-Phone attachment: Is his phone ringing non stop, but never answered when you are around. Or when you are around and he does answer, he gets off the phone as quickly as possible? We are all overly connected to our phones these days, but if his pocket doesn’t stop ringing and buzzing, you may want to find out who’s the other end that can’t go and evening without speaking with him.

5. Overly Defensive: Men and woman by nature go on the defensive when there’s something to hide, but if he’s become a raging lunatic when you ask about his night, and he accuses you of checking on him and he’s escalates things into a fight. He may be doing something he doesn’t want you to find out about.

6. Intimacy: Paradise issues are the clearest indication of troubles. If the usual time spend together possibly in bed just holding each other is a thing of the past, you need to come out and why he’s not interested in cuddling with you anymore. Even if he’s not cheating, this loss of intimacy with your partner is a definite sign that the love may be fading. Men desire affection just like a woman does, so if he’s not interested in getting it from you, maybe someone else is.

The most common signs that he’s cheating are there for you. Did you find any common patterns developing? Further investigation could help uncover if he’s cheating on you or not. Click Here to find out how.

Can a Marriage Survive an Affair?

October 28th, 2008 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

In my experience, the answer to this question is yes. My husband had an affair several years ago and although I felt that my world and my marriage were destroyed at that time, the affair was actually eventually a wake up call which made our marriage better.

Of course, there were hard times and hard work in between, but if several things are present (which I will discuss in this article), a marriage can absolutely survive an affair. It happens all of the time – and not just with people in the spot light, like Kathy Lee Gifford or Hillary Clinton, – but real, ordinary every day people who are able to put their marriage first and make the commitment to move past it. Here are the things that I believe must eventually take place for a marriage to survive an affair.

The Wife Must Be Able To Express Her Feelings And Have Them Understood Before Moving On: I can not tell you how many wives have told me that even when they feel relatively sure that they have begun to forgive their husbands and want to move on, they get stuck. The feelings of betrayal and rage always seem to keep coming back up. They may wake up in the morning and feel ready to move on only to be extremely angry and frustrated again by noon. This is perfectly normal. Sometimes, more patience is all that is needed. You just need to have the distance and healing that comes with time.

However, if these feelings keep cropping up after some time, take a look at whether you’ve gotten all of the feelings out and feel that you have been heard and understood. Your husband needs to know exactly how you feel and take responsibility for his part in it. You absolutely need to feel that you have not only been heard, but have also been completely understood.

Many women are afraid to lay it out there because they fear that it’s going to make a bad situation worse. But, if you don’t feel that your husband really gets it, then you probably can’t totally move on and begin to heal.

The Husband Must Take Responsibility For The Affair And Make Himself Available And Accountable: First off, I’d like to clear up what I think is the biggest reason that men cheat on their wives. This comes from own experience and research, but I believe it to be valid. Most men have affairs for emotional rather than physical reasons.

Believing that affairs are all about sex is a huge mistake. There is a well known affair / infidelity study which polled men who had cheated and almost 80% said that the affair happened because of emotional needs. (Only 12% said the “other woman” was prettier than their wife.)

Believe me when I say that I’m not sticking up for cheating husbands, but most are deeply sorry about the affair. Often times, men are embarrassed to admit they need or want more of your attention and support or that they are struggling personally, so they instead try to fix them problem on their own. They never think you will find out. This logic is twisted and flawed, but this is their thinking.

With that said, your husband’s choice was a horrible one, and he needs to take responsibility for it. He also needs to understand that during the healing process, you are going to need for him to be forthcoming about his whereabouts and with his reassurance and affection.

Putting up defenses or resenting your need for him to be accountable will only make you more suspicious of him. It’s best to just understand that, at least for a time, he will need to share with you issues that are important to you like where he is and who he is with. He also needs to be open to communication and exercises that can reassure you and help you to heal.

At the same time, a wife shouldn’t punish a husband forever. If he’s taken the necessary steps to hear you, understand you, make himself trustworthy and facilitate your healing, you can’t continue on with the hurtful spiteful comments to infinity because this will only tear the marriage down rather than build it up.

Both Parties Need To Be Open To Seeing The Affair As A Wake Up Call That Can Make The Marriage Better: When I used to read about couples who said that their marriage was actually stronger after an affair, I used to think that these people were delusional or lying.

But, now from my own experience and research, I know that this is very much true.

Affairs can end a marriage, weaken it, or tear it apart, but they can also bring problems that were hiding in the dark into the light. Couples often learn how to communicate and show affection and appreciation much more effectively and frequently. Suddenly, it becomes very clear to you that you can’t take your marriage for granted and you have to give it the same attention as you do or would your job or your children.

So many married couples just assume that their spouse know they love and appreciate them, but an affair shows you that you can’t make these assumptions without leaving your marriage vulnerable.

I know and understand my husband much better than I did before we did the work needed to survive the affair and vice versa. And, I’ve much improved upon my communication skills and making my marriage a priority. I know that right now, it may be hard for you to believe when I say my marriage not only survived the affair, but improved because of it, but it’s true for me and it can be for you, too if that is what you chose.

I struggled greatly with forgiving my husband after his affair, but after much introspection, conducting a lot of research, and listening to knowledgeable experts, I finally learned that forgiveness was possible. Although I never would’ve believed this two years ago, our marriage is stronger than ever. It took a lot of work, but it was worth it. Full-Figure Fashion

October 28th, 2008 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

There is a huge misconception about fashion for heavier women. The standard fashion styles and outfits advertised in magazines and presented in runway shows are not adapted for full figure women. If you are a little heavier than the rest, don’t think you can’t look as fabulous and glamorous as the rest. Nowadays, the fashion industry crosses barriers and welcomes full figured women to experiment new sizes and opportunities. There is a big variety of ingenious and fashionable designer collections for curvier or oversized women.

The black dress is always the ideal “wingman” in full figured women’s wardrobe; it could be a sexy v-neck, strapless, asymmetric, this piece promises to hide with discretion any excess baggage. But don’t limit yourself to black, some designer’s proposals are as big as their creations, but the purpose is the most valuable aspect of it; making plus size women feel beautiful and sexy, make them comfortable in their own skin. Heavier women like feeling sexy and know which colors they should wear to help them appear skinnier.

Bigger women shouldn’t be afraid of using traditional colors, they are openly welcome with unconventional styles that can make their figure shine, outstanding their best features. Even animal print is one of the popular trends for this season, may it be in a shirt or a sexier dress.

For the most special day of their lives, wedding dresses should not be limited to certain models, au contraire; there are millions of options for the wedding ensemble; whether with a traditional dress or anything a little more original and fun like a pantsuit.

Pants and black tops visually reduce the body’s volume, but to feel more modern and feminine, “ponchos” and pashminas always help to get that style that breaks away from the monotony of your usual wardrobe. Solid color dresses also are preferred for plus size women, add up a nice broche or belt to outshine that chic style that identifies you and will make you look very distinguished.

If you are the bustier type of woman, try enhancing your best feature for a girl’s night out, don’t hide it. For example, use a v-neck top with a more defining waistline whereas your breasts will not be the first people that will pop to an onlooker’s eyes. You can also wear a shirt with baggy sleeves and a pencil skirt that can elongate your figure. If you get tired of hiding yourself behind embellished shirts and skirts, don’t forget that a dress with a lacy bust line or a nice print can work for a day at the office as well as a casual affair at night.

Feeling comfortable is the most important part of dressing up. Some people say that women don’t dress up for men, they dress up for other women, but this should change; you should always dress up for yourself and your self-esteem. Look at yourself in the mirror before going out and always tell to yourself how beautiful you look.

4 Things Men Want From Women – Mystery Revealed

October 27th, 2008 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

What do men want from women is one of the most dreaded questions that most single women have to deal with. In their attempt to impress their boyfriend by being exactly what their boyfriend wants they seem to succeed in doing exactly the opposite. The question ‘what do men want from women’ seems to have no answer at times. But there is no need to be disappointed if you are not able to figure out what do men want from women. There are four qualities in a woman that any man would be attracted to.

(1) Confidence: You don’t have to be the most beautiful women in town to be confident. All that is needed is the belief that you are worth his efforts. Don’t make the mistake of praising yourself in front of him. It would be more interesting for him to discover the qualities in you by himself. And he would appreciate them more when he finds them without you informing him. And the more he discovers the more would he want you to share them with him.

(2) Trust: This is something that men rate very high when you ask what men want from women. They don’t like their woman to be suspicious about them all the time. They would rather have a woman who would believe in their words. A man would be very happy with a woman who trusts her man and doesn’t think he cheats on her. A nagging woman or one that is always asking questions about his activities and friends would put the man off.

(3) Kindness: This is important for men but beware. Do not fake it. If you act being kind just to impress the man you should know that the truth would come out sooner or later. It is very good to be kind to the man but even better if you appreciate and compliment the waiters in the restaurant or thank the cab driver when you are with him. But it should be genuine. The best you can do is to make it a habit this will not only get you good response from your man but also from every one around you. Kindness is not only what men want from women but what everyone wants from everyone.

(4) Commitment: If you find the man to be the one for you it is better to not express your desire to be committed immediately. Give him time to be sure about his feelings. If you jump the gun it would only scare him away. Always try and not think too far ahead in terms of commitment. Considering what do men want from women in terms of commitment is basically time to make a decision. It usually is not about whether to get committed to you but when to get committed to you. Men take a little more time than women when deciding about commitment.

Health Effects of Alcohol Consumption

October 26th, 2008 -- Posted in Article | No Comments »

Long-term effects-If you are regular having high amount of alcohol intake it may increase the risk of liver diseases and cancer. Regular having more than two drinks a day may increases the risk of developing alcoholism, alcoholic liver disease, and some forms of cancer. Having between one to two alcoholic drinks a day has been shown to have positive effects on health, unless contraindicated, chiefly because of its cardiovascular effects.

Short-term effects- Alcohol supplies some effects on body that shows in very short period of time. Alcohol, specifically ethanol, is a potent central nervous system depressant with a range of side effects. The amount and circumstances of consumption play a large part in determining the extent of intoxication and for example, if you consume alcohol after a heavy meal is less likely to produce visible signs of intoxication than consumption on an empty stomach. Hydration also plays a role, especially in determining the extent of hangovers

How alcohol travels- Alcohol is metabolized extremely quickly by the body. Unlike foods, which require time for digestion, alcohol needs no digestion and is quickly absorbed. About 20 percent is absorbed directly across the walls of an empty stomach and can reach the brain within one minute. Once alcohol reaches the stomach, it begins to break down with the alcohol dehydrogenate enzyme. This process reduces the amount of alcohol entering the blood by approximately 20%. In addition, about 10% of the alcohol is expelled in the breath and urine.

Alcohol and pregnancy-Women that drink heavily during pregnancy are at risk of having babies with a condition called fetal alcohol syndrome. This can result in growth deficiencies, nervous system problems, lowered intelligence, and facial abnormalities in the child. It is also called fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and all the symptoms are not always present and can vary in how serious they are.

Health affects of alcohol consumption-Taking alcohol in regular manner affects very badly on health. Several recent studies have examined the health effects of alcohol and for many people, moderate consumption appears beneficial. The largest study to date to look at the relationship between alcohol consumption and mortality found that those who drank one drink a day had a 20% lower death rate from all causes compared to nondrinkers. For deaths due just too cardiovascular diseases, the death rates were 30-40% lower for those reporting at least one drink daily compared to nondrinkers.
